VSTET is one of Dunedin’s newest NZQA-registered training provider. Our aim is to help guide Youth through our variety of exciting programme options on their pathway to Stepping up and Stepping Out. We cater for Youth Guaranteestudents ranging in age from 16-24, with a limited number of Alternative Education students, S.T.A.R. programmes for secondary schools, and short courses.

LYNNE JOHNSTON MEd, BBS, PGDip Arts (Educ), PGDipTchg
General Manager - DirectorLynne has had more than thirty years in the secondary and tertiary sectors with most of those years being in senior management roles. As a qualified and experienced teacher Lynne is committed to youth education. Programme development, compliance, and education administration, are particular strengths. Lynne has a range of national qualifications over and above her degrees and diplomas, including a Certificate in Quality Assurance (L5). She is a fifth generation Dunedinite and is passionately committed to enabling sound education opportunities in the Dunedin area.
Mark JohnstonDirectorMark has had extensive work in the IT field internationally, working in remote locations for the health sector (Australian Commnwealth). His initial trade training in the RNZAF position him well to teach our students. He has had many years as an adult educator, tutoring computing for over twenty years, writing assessments, and tutoring trade courses. Mark is also a stalwart Dunedinite, tracing his whakapapa back the first ships arriving in Port Chalmers
Abby WhyteTutorAbby has background education and experience in both Childcare and Hospitality. Abby had seven years’ experience employed as a home-based carer while her children were young. She then moved to the service sector in a range of roles in different facilities. Abby still works as a Barista on Saturdays which keeps her teaching relevant to today's industry standards. Abby has been employed full-time in the education sector for the last six years and is passionate about working with our rangatahi. She encourages them to expand their skills and make the most of the opportunities available in a safe and supportive environment.
Richard BrooksConstruction TutorBefore joining VSTET Richard worked for nearly two years as a Building and Construction Level 3 tutor, building tiny homes. Richard has been involved in some quite varied careers which include many years importing and selling hairdressing supplies, and as a hydrographic survey assistant. A father of two young adults. Richard is a born and bred Dunedinite with a strong desire to encourage better outcomes for youth.
Joy ThorleyClassroom AssistantJoy has worked with VSTET for over a year. She has wonderful communication skills which have been fine tuned through years of customer centred roles. Her previous occupation as a qualified hairdresser is what led to a career change to become an educator, first teaching hairdressing at a private training institute. Joy is currently working toward an NZQA qualification in Teacher Support to complement the work she does with the learners at VSTET. Joy’s family is from the Scottish settlement of Waipu in Whangarei, Northland, where her family clan is still well-known and active in the community.
